The Kraken lost their top defenseman in the middle of a one-goal game.

Brandon Montour did not return to Thursday night’s game against the Lightning because of a lower-body injury, the team announced:

Seattle did not say what happened or how long he could be out. The Kraken went on to lose 4-3 in overtime when Victor Hedman scored 2:07 into the extra period.

Sound Of Hockey posted Montour’s last shift, and he took an awkward fall going over the blue line. The Kraken Hockey Network broadcast said he went missing twice during the game. Watch the video:

Daily Faceoff’s Ryan Cuneo noted the injury may have come on a shift early in the second period, when Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov tripped Montour up. Neither the team nor the broadcast confirmed that.

Montour had no goals and five assists in seven games before Thursday. The 32-year-old leads Seattle with just over 24 and a half minutes a night. He played about 22 and a half last season, when he had 11 goals and 32 points in 64 games.

The Brantford, Ontario native is in the third year of the seven-year, $50 million deal he signed in July 2024 after helping the Panthers win the Cup. Losing him would hit a Kraken blue line that carried the team to a 5-2-0 start, the same group that opened the season with a home opener rout of Calgary.

Seattle finishes its five-game road trip Saturday in Florida. Whether Montour makes that game is the first question.
