A filthy one-timer from the Russian superstar. Ovechkin has now scored 39 goals and tallied 27 helpers this season in 58 contests. Don’t forget, Ovi is also 39 years old. Absolutely insane. We’re looking at the LeBron James of the NHL here.
Gretzky holds the record with 894 goals and with seven games left in the regular season, Alex Ovechkin has a very realistic chance of being the new No. 1. The Caps have a relatively easy schedule to close out the campaign, too.
Washington faces the Chicago Blackhawks, the New York Islanders twice, the Columbus Blue Jackets twice, the Hurricanes, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. In other words, basically no playoff teams, except for the Canes.
If we take a deeper look at the numbers, Ovi has already scored twice against Carolina in 2024-25 and also found the back of the net versus the Blue Jackets earlier in the season.
While getting as far as they can in the playoffs is definitely the priority for the Caps, there’s also no doubt that Ovechkin’s teammates will be feeding him the puck as much as possible. I think just about everyone wants to see the legend break the record before the season concludes instead of having to wait until 2025-26.
Alex Ovechkin is also just one goal shy of his 14th season with a minimum of 40 goals, which is an NHL record in itself.
Epic stuff from the future Hall of Famer.
