HIGHLIGHTS

  • Alex Ovechkin moves within four goals of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record
  • Ovi has eight games remaining this season
  • Read below for when Ovechkin may score the record-breaking goal

Alex Ovechkin inched closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goalscoring record with a power-play marker on Tuesday night in Boston. The Washington Capitals winger put home a loose puck in front to give his team a 2-0 lead late in the first period.

The 39-year-old Ovechkin is one of the oldest players in the NHL, but it isn’t showing. He’s now up to 38 goals this season and 891 in his career. He added an assist on the eventual game-winning goal by Tom Wilson in the third period as well.

The Great 8 has now scored in two straight games and hasn’t gone more than two games without a goal since returning from the 4 Nations Face-Off break. Ovechkin has 12 goals in his last 18 and could tie Gretzky’s career mark of 894 goals any game now — he does have two hat tricks this season, after all.

But when might Ovechkin realistically break the record?

The Capitals conclude a quick two-game road trip on Wednesday night in Carolina. They then return home to host the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night before a Sunday matchup on Long Island.

The back-and-forth travel continues for Washington after three days off for a home game against the Carolina Hurricanes on the 10th and a home-and-home set on the 12th and 13th against the Blue Jackets.

Ovechkin is averaging 0.65 goals per game this season, with 38 in 58 contests. That’s in line with his 12 goals in 18 games since February 23, as well. Based on that number, Ovi is on track to score his record-breaking 895th career NHL goal in 6.15 games, or the Capitals’ final home game of the season on April 13 against the Blue Jackets.
