15-year-old Matthew Savoie knocked unconscious

15-year-old Matthew Savoie of the WHL Winnipeg Ice was knocked unconscious by a massive open-ice hit by 19-year-old Marcus Sekundiak of the Brandon Wheat Kings at Wayne Fleming Arena on Saturday night.

Savoie regained consciousness but had to be helped off the ice. Sekundiak is listed at 5’11” and 188lbs, while the younger Savoie is only 5’9″ and 178lbs.

It’s a tough video to watch, but certainly positive news that Savoie was able to be helped off.

Savoie is one of the most promising hockey prospects in Western Canada. He was the first-overall selection in the 2019 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft and signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement with the Winnipeg ICE this summer.

In his first 12 games in the WHL, Savoie has recorded five assists and 22 shots on goal. The ICE are currently ranked second in the East Division with 43 points through 35 games.

Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for Matthew.
