William Eklund Highlights
A closer look at the game San Jose drafted seventh overall.
William Eklund FAQ
The Ottawa Senators. San Jose traded him on June 23, 2026 along with prospects Kasper Halttunen and Brandon Svoboda for the ninth overall pick in the 2026 draft. Eklund wears number 27 in Ottawa after five seasons in number 72 with the Sharks.
He has 165 points in 256 NHL games, with 51 goals. All of them came with San Jose.
Stockholm, Sweden. He came up through Djurgardens IF, the club his father Christian played for, and made his SHL debut there at 17.
San Jose took him seventh overall in the 2021 NHL Draft. NHL Central Scouting had ranked him the top international prospect available that year.
No. He has not dressed for a single postseason game. San Jose missed the playoffs in all five seasons he spent there, which is a big part of why the move to Ottawa matters. The Senators have made it two years running.
Victor is his younger brother. The Islanders took him 16th overall in 2025. Their father Christian Eklund spent 11 seasons with Djurgardens in Sweden.
He is 24. He was born on October 12, 2002.
He signed a three year extension worth 16.8 million dollars on July 1, 2025. That is a 5.6 million cap hit through 2028-29, and he is a restricted free agent when it expires.
2024-25. He put up 17 goals and 41 assists for 58 points in 77 games, led the Sharks in assists and finished second on the team in scoring behind Macklin Celebrini.
Only in exhibitions so far. He made his senior debut in a friendly against Denmark in April 2021 and played the Euro Hockey Tour in 2024-25. COVID kept him off the 2021 world junior roster, an injury in a pre-tournament game cost him the 2025 world championship, and he was not named to Sweden’s 2026 Olympic team.
