Henrik Sedin’s son got his first big international moment on Saturday, and it came on a soccer pitch in Mexico.
Valter Sedin scored his first competitive goal for Canada’s under-20 team, pulling his side level in the 56th minute of a 2-2 draw with Jamaica at Estadio Universitario BUAP in Puebla. The 19-year-old midfielder cut through traffic and his shot took a deflection on the way past the goalkeeper.

That point was enough to send Canada through as the Group C winner. A 3-0 opening win over Panama and a 1-1 draw with Honduras left them tied with Jamaica on points, and the goal difference from the Panama result broke it.
Sedin wasn’t supposed to be in Mexico at all. Canada Soccer listed him as an alternate when it named the squad on July 17, and he only joined once an injury opened a spot.
Canada Soccer spelled out the stakes when it announced that roster. The four semifinalists earn spots at the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, and the tournament also decides a men’s berth for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles:
Growing up in Vancouver while his dad captained the Canucks, he picked soccer over hockey when it came time to choose one. He came through the Whitecaps academy, played a season with the club’s MLS Next Pro side, then moved to Sweden in 2025 to develop with Hammarby.
He is eligible for both Canada and Sweden, and the Canadian program got to him first. Sedin joined the U-20 group back in May ahead of the Maurice Revello Tournament in France.
The quarterfinals run August 4-5 at Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla, with the semifinals on August 7 and the final in Mexico City on August 9.
