TJ Oshie is putting the skates back on.
The former Capitals winger will suit up for One More Shift at North Dakota on Jan. 15, when the Fighting Hawks host St. Thomas. He is not playing in the game. He’ll pull on a full UND uniform, take a couple of laps around Ralph Engelstad Arena before pregame introductions, then stand on the blue line with the current roster for the anthem.
Brad Elliott Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald had the news first, and UND laid out the rest in its promotional schedule. Mark Taylor, a captain on the 1980 national title team, gets his shift first on Oct. 17 against Bentley. Both men get a pregame ceremony.
Retirement came just over a year ago. Chronic back trouble ended a 1,010-game career, and Oshie closed the book in June 2025 with a post that read like a goodbye letter.
He’s stayed around the game since, working as an analyst for ESPN and Monumental Sports Network. January is a different assignment. That’s the barn where it all started.
Oshie spent three seasons in Grand Forks from 2005 to 2008 and piled up 142 points in 129 games. He led the team in scoring as a freshman and set a school record with nine game-winning goals that year. His junior season brought AHCA All-American honors and a spot among the Hobey Baker finalists, and North Dakota reached the Frozen Four in all three of his campaigns before he signed with St. Louis, the club that took him 24th overall in 2005. Connor McMichael grabbed No. 77 with the Blues this summer partly as a nod to him.
UND started the tradition in 2018, and Oshie and Taylor will be the 11th and 12th alumni to take part. Ed Belfour, Dave Christian, Dennis Hextall, Tony Hrkac, Dixon Ward, Jim Archibald, Brandon Bochenski, Matt Greene, Ryan Duncan and Zach Parise have all had their laps. The Fighting Hawks are 9-1 in games featuring a One More Shift skate, which is a decent omen for a January night against St. Thomas.
Oshie walked away with 302 goals and 695 points across 16 NHL seasons, a Stanley Cup in 2018 and a shootout in Sochi that still gets replayed every February. Grand Forks gets one more look at Oshie in a North Dakota sweater.
