Sidney Crosby has a lucky belt.
He has worn it on game days for something like 20 years, and when 32 Thoughts pushed him for one more detail, the Penguins captain laughed and shut it down. “I’m not going there,” Crosby said. “I don’t talk about the belt much, but yeah, you’re on to something.”

Sportsnet’s Kyle Bukauskas and Elliotte Friedman got there at the end of a long 32 Thoughts interview, introducing the belt as a rumor they were not sure they should repeat. They asked whether it was real. Crosby said it was, then tried to move on immediately.
“We don’t really need to go more than that, but I’ll confirm it.”
Asked directly whether the same belt has survived two decades of game days, he gave the same two words twice: “Could be.”
One detail did slip out. Crosby was asked how a belt stays in service that long on the same waist, and he admitted the fit has not always cooperated.
“I don’t know how it’s still going. I’ve fluctuated a little bit over that time. So yeah, it’s still hanging on.”
Nobody around the league is going to be surprised by any of this. Crosby won the most superstitious category in the 2021 NHLPA Player Poll with more than a quarter of the vote, and his routines have been catalogued for years, from the pregame peanut butter and jelly sandwich to the rule about not speaking to his mother or sister on game days.
The belt is the one nobody had found.
Crosby turned 39 in August and is heading into the last season of his current deal. He has been eligible to sign an extension since July 1 and has made clear he is in no hurry to sort out the next one.
Entering his 22nd NHL season, with every other part of his routine long since picked apart, the thing Crosby guards hardest is a belt.
