Chris Ilitch isn’t hiring a general manager first.

The Red Wings owner told reporters Thursday, including The Athletic’s Max Bultman, that he is searching for a president of hockey operations, and that person will decide if Detroit adds a GM at all.

Ilitch was asked who he is looking for and what happens to the GM job.

“I am seeking a president of hockey operations,” Ilitch said. “I will leave it up to that individual once they’re on board as to whether and when they would like to, if they’d like to, add a general manager and when they may like to do that.”

He was also asked when fans should expect a hire. Ilitch didn’t give a date.

“This search could end soon, during this season. It could be at the end of the season,” Ilitch said. “I’ll make the hire when I find the right person. It’s just too important for this organization.”

Ilitch described the job as an “innovative difference-maker.” He called analytics a trait he considers important in a modern NHL leader, but didn’t want to over- or under-emphasize it.

Shawn Horcoff, the interim GM, is still in the mix. Detroit named him to the role on Sept. 15 when Steve Yzerman moved to an advisor job, as we covered at the time:

Ilitch was asked about Horcoff’s work so far and said he likes what he sees.

“Shawn’s doing a great job,” Ilitch said. “He’s come in; he’s hit the ground running. It’s a great opportunity for him. It’s a great opportunity for me to see him in action, and he’s been really good. Did a great job with Alex.”

That is Alex DeBrincat, who signed a seven-year, $91 million extension this week. Elliotte Friedman had the word that the deal was close:

Plenty else is unsettled in Detroit. The Red Wings sit at 2-3-2 after a 2-1 win over the Flyers, Simon Edvinsson is still unsigned, and Dylan Larkin is still looking to be traded.

Ilitch said he isn’t second-guessing the past. “I’m determined to find the right leadership, and I’m not really looking backwards,” he said. “I’m looking forward, and very focused on finding our next leader.”
