The Red Wings have been asking around for permission to interview general manager candidates. Actually interviewing them is where the process keeps stalling.
Elliotte Friedman dug into Detroit’s vacancy on Thursday’s episode of 32 Thoughts, and what he heard is not a great look with camp a week away:
“Detroit has asked for permission for some people and has not interviewed them,” Friedman said.

Friedman did put a caveat on it. His own Sportsnet contract standoff pulled his attention elsewhere for a stretch in August, and he said he needs to get a better handle on where the search actually sits.
Frank Seravalli got to the same place a day earlier. He was asked about Detroit’s management search on the FAN Morning Show and said the candidates who have been publicly linked to the job are not even getting through the door:
Steve Yzerman stepped down on July 15 and moved into a senior adviser role. Shawn Horcoff has handled the day-to-day since.
The club hired an outside firm to run the search and wanted a general manager in place by Labor Day. Labor Day arrived and Tigers GM Jeff Greenberg pulled his name instead.
Simon Edvinsson is the bill that keeps growing. Friedman said Yzerman had a short-term offer out to the defenseman earlier in the summer, and the blue line market has moved a mile since then.
Those talks have been frozen since the GM chair emptied, and Edvinsson is still unsigned.
Dylan Larkin’s June trade request has never been rescinded. Philadelphia called about the captain last week and got told they were not on his list.
Camp opens Sept. 17. Whoever finally takes the job walks in with an unsigned Edvinsson and a captain who asked out in June.
