Hockey Canada has put together a new brain trust, and it has some serious names on it.
The federation announced Wednesday that Steve Yzerman, Doug Armstrong, Brad Treliving, Shane Doan and Bruce Cassidy will make up a new National Teams Advisory Group. Here’s the announcement:
The group is meant to “provide mentorship, leadership and hockey acumen” to Hockey Canada’s men’s, women’s and para teams, plus the hockey operations department, according to the release.
TSN’s Darren Dreger added a couple of details. Treliving is also working with Canada’s National Junior Team, and a separate captains club has been created with Doan to mentor Canadian captains at every level. Dreger noted that three former Olympic GMs are now part of the larger group:
Cassidy is the one with a history already. Hockey Canada hired him in September as a special advisor to Daniele Sauvageau, the GM of the national women’s team. He was an assistant on Canada’s staff at the 4 Nations Face-Off and the 2026 Olympics, and won a Stanley Cup with Vegas in 2023.
Yzerman is a senior advisor with the Red Wings after the team moved him out of the GM chair. He ran Canada’s men’s team at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. Armstrong is the Blues’ president of hockey operations and was Canada’s GM at the 2026 Olympics.
Treliving was the GM for Canada at the 2026 World Championship, where the team lost the bronze medal game to Norway. He spent three seasons running the Maple Leafs before Toronto moved on.
Doan was the GM for Canada at the 2022 Olympics and worlds, and he and the Leafs parted ways in May after the Chayka hire. He owns the Kamloops Blazers of the WHL.
