These are the type of moments that make hockey great.

Chicago’ Blackhawks forwards Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews congratulated Alex Ovechkin on 800 career NHL goals. Ovechkin achieved the milestone in a game against the Blackhawks on Tuesday night at United Center.

Ovechkin scored a hat trick against the Blackhawks to give him goal numbers 798, 799 and 800 in his career. He became just the third player in NHL history to reach the 800-goal mark, joining Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky.

The Capitals blew out the Blackhawks by a 7-3 score, but that didn’t stop some Chicago players from sticking around to pay tribute to Ovechkin. Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews both went and shook Ovechkin’s hand after the game ended.

Toews commented before the game on his respect for Ovechkin. It’s easy to see why Toews sought out the Russian legend after the game.

“It’s incredible,” Toews said. “There’s a lot of Wayne Gretzky’s records you never thought anyone would touch, especially the goal one. So to see where he’s at, 800 goals, it’s hard to comprehend, really.”

While we wish Ovechkin scored his 800th goal in front of his home fans, the Chicago fans at United Center gave Ovechkin the best road atmosphere he could ask for. Fans in the Windy City serenaded Ovechkin with Ovi! chants after the historic goal.

Ovechkin felt the love from both the Chicago players and the fans Tuesday night.

“They were great”, Ovechkin said. “Cheering my name, throwing their hats. Even in the warmups, I was feeling that energy right away. The fans watch me and the fans wanted to see that historical moment.”

Kane and Toews are two Chicago Blackhawks legends who have each won the Stanley Cup three times. Kane and Toews paying respect to Ovechkin is a true instance of real recognizing real.
