Cole Hutson picked up his first NHL assist last March. It cost him almost everything he was wearing.
Alex Ovechkin is building a hockey memorabilia museum in his hometown of Moscow, and the collection comes with a rule attached. Any time Ovechkin scores a milestone goal, he asks whoever set it up to hand over the gear they used to do it.
Hutson told the story to Upper Deck’s Paul Zickler, who repeated it on stage with former NHL forward Scottie Upshall at the National Sports Collectors Convention earlier this month.
“Cole Hutson even told us the story. He assisted on his thousandth goal. He had to give Ovi his full lineup of gear, other than his jockstrap. He signed every item, and it’s going to go into Ovi’s museum that he’s building in his hometown.”

The goal itself came March 22 against Colorado. Ovechkin one-timed a Dylan Strome feed past Mackenzie Blackwood from his office for career goal No. 1,000, regular season and playoffs combined.
Only Wayne Gretzky has more. He finished with 1,016.
Three games into his NHL career, Hutson got the secondary assist. First point he ever recorded, and it came with an equipment bill.

Strome went through the same routine after setting up the record-breaking 895th goal, so the rookie was not the first Capital to get the ask.
Teammates aren’t the only source, either. Over the past year Ovechkin has collected jerseys from Mikhail Sergachev, Mikael Backlund, Anze Kopitar, Evgeni Malkin, Brady Tkachuk, Brad Marchand and Marie-Philip Poulin, plus signed sticks from Jack and Luke Hughes after a game in New Jersey.
He kept the puck and the stick from No. 895 too, both pulled from the April 2025 game against the Islanders.
Ovechkin expects the museum to be open to visitors sometime next year. Hutson’s gear will be in it, minus the one piece he got to keep.
