The Edmonton Oilers lost superstar Connor McDavid to an ankle injury in Monday’s embarrassing loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, but it doesn’t appear he’ll miss too much time.

The team announced Wednesday that the three-time Hart Trophy winner is expected to be out for two to three weeks.

After taking the opening face-off in Columbus, McDavid took a hard fall just 37 seconds into the contest and skated off the ice on his own power. The Oilers quickly ruled him out for the remainder of the matchup with a lower-body injury.

Edmonton ended up falling 6-1, dropping to 4-5-1 in the process. McDavid is having a respectable campaign so far, scoring three goals and supplying seven assists in 10 appearances. He’s registered a point in all but two games in 2024-25.

Injuries aren’t typical for the former first-overall pick. He’s only missed eight games across the last four seasons due to injury. McDavid is one of the most durable players in the NHL and, of course, arguably the best player in the world.

The Oilers need their franchise cornerstone healthy if they’re going to make another run at the Stanley Cup. But, they also have more than enough depth to stay afloat for a few weeks.

That just means the likes of Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Evan Bouchard, and Jeff Skinner, among others, need to rise to the occasion and produce offensively. The club also needs Zach Hyman to find his best again. A key piece for Edmonton, the 32-year-old has just one point in 10 games.

McDavid was brilliant in last season’s playoffs and won the Conn Smythe Trophy. The 27-year-old led Edmonton to the finals before losing in seven games to the Florida Panthers.

The Western Conference champions are back in action on Thursday against the Nashville Predators. They’re currently in seventh place in the Pacific Division.
