Evan Gold is an Islander, and he showed up with two job titles.
New York announced Monday that Gold has joined Mathieu Darche’s hockey operations staff as an assistant general manager, two days after his Boston contract ran out on Aug. 1. He also becomes general manager of the Hamilton Hammers, the club’s AHL affiliate.
Stefen Rosner of NHL.com had the hire first when it was still a few days from official, and he filled in the piece that changes the org chart. Gold replaces Chris Lamoriello in Hamilton, and Lamoriello shifts toward player personnel and the scouting staff.
Darche laid out what sold him on Gold in the team’s release:
“Evan brings a rare combination of experience, intelligence, and results to our Hockey Operations department. Over the past several years, he has excelled in nearly every facet of building a successful franchise at the NHL and AHL levels, from contract negotiations and cap management to leading the Providence Bruins to the best record in the AHL this past season.”
Gold spent 11 seasons in Boston before the Bruins tore up their front office in July. He arrived in 2015 with a McGill law degree as director of legal affairs for hockey operations, moved up to assistant GM in 2019, and took over Providence in 2023.
His own statement went straight at the goal:
“I am incredibly grateful to Mathieu and the entire Islanders ownership group for the opportunity to be part of such a respected franchise and to help build a Stanley Cup champion on Long Island.”
Vancouver and Toronto both interviewed him for their general manager openings this summer and went elsewhere. New York gets him as an assistant instead, working alongside Lamoriello, Ryan Bowness and Steve Pellegrini on contracts, cap management and scouting.
The Hamilton half of the job is not a consolation prize. Gold’s Providence club finished with the best record in the AHL last season, and the Hammers are a brand-new operation after the affiliate moved up from Bridgeport.
Victor Eklund, Cole Eiserman, Kashawn Aitcheson and Quinn Finley are all pushing toward pro hockey at the same time. Most of that development now runs through Gold.
