McDavid took the opening face off but shortly after took a scary fall and never returned.

Minimal details are known at this time, but not a good sign. It was a tough beginning to this contest for the Oilers, who already trail Columbus 3-0 at the end of the first period. The team announced McDavid won’t play again in this matchup.

It hasn’t been a great campaign so far for last year’s Stanley Cup finalists. Edmonton is just 4-4-1 and lost their first three games before finally picking up a win in mid-October against the Philadelphia Flyers.

McDavid has been putting up respectable numbers, however, scoring three times and supplying seven assists in nine appearances. He’s registered a point in all but two games in 2024-25.

Edmonton, of course needs their franchise cornerstone healthy if they’re going to be a legitimate contender again. He was brilliant in 2023-24, scoring 32 and setting up 100 for a total of 132 points. McDavid also showed out in the playoffs where the Oilers lost in seven games to the Florida Panthers in the Finals.

On a more positive note, the 27-year-old was able to skate off the ice on his power, which hopefully means it’s not a serious injury. McDavid has managed to stay relatively healthy throughout the course of his NHL career, never playing fewer than 56 games since his rookie year.

The Oilers are fifth in the Pacific Division and definitely have enough depth to stay afloat if McDavid misses time. That would just mean the likes of Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jeff Skinner, and Evan Bouchard, among others, need to step up and produce more.
