Roster cut day hit hard around the NHL on Friday.
Sixty-one players landed on waivers in one of the biggest single-day tallies of the preseason, according to PuckPedia. Brandon Tanev, Eric Comrie and Oskar Sundqvist headline the list, with Opening Night rosters due Monday at 5 p.m. ET.
Utah’s Tanev is the most recognizable name on the wire. The 34-year-old managed just three assists in 56 games last season, well down from his career year with Seattle in 2022-23, when he scored 35 points and helped the Kraken reach the playoffs for the first time.
He has two years left on his deal at a $2.5 million cap hit. Here’s the breakdown:
St. Louis put both Oskar Sundqvist and Nathan Walker on the wire. Sundqvist has a Stanley Cup ring from the Blues’ 2019 run, but that didn’t save him from a roster crunch on a rebuilding team.
San Jose waived goaltender Eric Comrie, and Carolina cut loose defenseman Pierre-Olivier Joseph.
The Hurricanes also placed Skyler Brind’Amour on waivers. He’s the son of head coach Rod Brind’Amour, and even that last name didn’t buy him immunity from a numbers crunch this week.
