Mitch Marner has his first overtime winner with the Golden Knights.

Marner scored at 2:40 of the extra frame Saturday night to lift Vegas to a 2-1 win over the Kings at T-Mobile Arena, per NHL.com’s Paul Delos Santos. It was the eighth overtime goal of his NHL career.

The play started with a face-off win in the offensive zone. Mark Stone sent a pass to Marner, who glided into the high slot and buried a wrist shot glove side.

Marner explained how it came together after the game.

“Just effort off the draw. It came back up to me,” Marner said. “Saw a gap going downhill, took the ice up ahead and got the shot off.”

Trevor Connelly opened the scoring for Vegas at 2:28 of the second period. He one-timed a cross-ice feed from Stone on the power play for his first multipoint game in the NHL, adding an assist on the night.

Artemi Panarin tied it 1-1 at 6:21 of the second with a wrist shot from the high slot that snuck in off the left post. Los Angeles had a 5-on-3 for 1:31 late in the first period but managed only three shots on goal.

Kings coach Peter Laviolette was asked about that missed chance. “We needed quicker movement, more of a shot mentality in that 5-on-3,” he said.

Carter Hart made 26 saves for the Golden Knights, who sit at 5-1-0 and have won four in a row. Darcy Kuemper stopped 30 for Los Angeles, which fell to 0-2-2.

Vegas coach Ryan Craig was asked about Connelly’s spot on the power play. “Trevor can make plays there. We’ve seen it a few times. That’s what we want him to do,” Craig said.

Stone finished with two assists. Jack Eichel, who scored a penalty shot in Vegas’ comeback win over Toronto earlier this week, saw his season-opening point streak end at five games after three goals and nine assists.

Marner has been steady since arriving in Vegas. He scored his first goal of the season against Vancouver in the opener, and now he has the overtime winner.

The Kings also placed Mats Zuccarello (upper body) and Alex Turcotte (undisclosed) on injured reserve Saturday. Jared Wright made his season debut after signing a two-year deal that day.
