The Ducks won in Calgary, but they may have paid for it.
Cutter Gauthier suffered an upper-body injury in the first period of Saturday’s 4-2 win over the Flames and did not return. Anaheim announced it during the game.
Gauthier logged just five shifts at the Saddledome before heading to the room. It’s unclear how he got hurt, and there was no update on his status after the game.
The 22-year-old led Anaheim with 41 goals and 69 points last season. He signed a six-year, $81 million contract in September and had four points through the Ducks’ first five games. He put up two goals on the power play in the home opener, which we covered earlier this month.
This isn’t the first time he’s dealt with something like this. Gauthier left a March 30 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs with an upper-body injury and missed five games before returning in April.
Poehling was hurt too. He scored the game-winning goal, a short-handed tally at 5:35 of the third period, but slid into the goalpost and Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf on the play and did not return.
Ville Husso made 27 saves in his first start of the season. Jackson LaCombe, Frank Vatrano and Nikita Nesterenko also scored for Anaheim, which improved to 4-1-0. Calgary fell to 0-5-0 for the first time in franchise history.
The Ducks host the Flames on Tuesday to finish the home-and-home set. Anaheim will be looking for clarity on both forwards before then.
