Matthew Mayich is in critical condition in a Phoenix hospital.
The Arizona State defenseman and St. Louis Blues prospect has been hospitalized for five days now after collapsing during an outdoor team workout in Tempe, College Hockey News reported Tuesday. The same report says the Arizona Republic described the incident as a cardiac event and reported that Mayich is in a coma.
His family is asking for continued prayers:
Mayich went down around 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 20 at Sun Angel Stadium, the school’s track and field facility. Tempe Fire Medical Rescue answered a 911 call reporting a heat-related illness, treated him on site and took him to a nearby hospital.
That morning was the first day of Arizona State’s fall semester and the first day the NCAA permits college hockey teams to hold official activities. The workout ran roughly 45 minutes and was team sanctioned, though not necessarily with coaches on hand.
Phoenix was sitting at about 88 degrees at 8:30 a.m., with the National Weather Service having issued an extreme heat warning that same day.
Arizona State confirmed over the weekend that a player had been hospitalized but held back his name, citing student privacy. Vice president of media relations Chris Fiscus was the one who issued the school’s statement on Sunday.
“The university offers its support for the student-athlete, their family and all our student-athletes during this difficult time.”
Mike McMahon of College Hockey News explained why he waited to name the player:
The virtual service was organized by the Canadian-Croatian Chamber of Commerce and held Tuesday at noon ET, with Mayich’s cousin among those who spoke. Anyone who wanted to join was welcome:
Mayich grew up in Stoney Creek, Ontario, and the St. Louis Blues took him 170th overall in the 2023 draft. He spent four seasons with the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s, piling up 106 points in 250 games.
Clarkson came next. Mayich put up seven goals and 15 points in 34 games as a freshman and led all Clarkson rookies in ice time at 19:47 a night. Arizona State brought him in this summer as one of 18 newcomers on the Sun Devils roster.
He has yet to play a game for Arizona State. Right now the only thing anyone connected to the program is thinking about is Mayich getting out of that hospital bed.
