Jordan Binnington would probably like to forget his first start of the season.
The Blues goalie coughed up two goals with his stick Saturday night as the Avalanche rolled to a 6-1 win at Ball Arena. Colorado did all its damage in the first 40 minutes, and two of those six goals came straight off Binnington’s puck handling.
His first gaffe made it 4-0 in the second period. Binnington tried to clear the puck up the middle from behind his own net, and Artturi Lehkonen knocked it down at the right circle and snapped it low past a sliding Binnington.
Watch the Lehkonen goal:
It got worse late in the period. Nicolas Roy made it 5-0 at 18:02, and Martin Necas scored 23 seconds later.
Binnington went behind the net to play the puck again, but it hopped over his stick and right to Gabriel Landeskog. Landeskog slid it into the crease, and Necas backhanded it into a wide-open net to make it 6-0.
Check out the second misplay:
He stayed in for the full 60 minutes and finished with 30 saves on 36 shots. Denver hasn’t been kind to him lately. The last time he started there, on New Year’s Eve of 2025, the Avs also beat him six times in a 6-1 final.
Necas finished with two goals and an assist, while Nathan MacKinnon added three helpers and now has five points through two games. Colorado has scored six or more in both of its games so far, following up an 8-4 opening-night win over the Kings.
St. Louis was playing the second half of a back-to-back after a 4-0 win in Dallas on Friday. The Blues managed just four shots in the first period and 26 for the night, with Dalibor Dvorsky spoiling Mackenzie Blackwood’s shutout bid early in the third.
Head coach Jim Montgomery was asked how this one got away from his team. He pointed to a lineup full of new faces still figuring things out.
“Unfortunately, we’re gonna have nights where we’re not on the same page,” Montgomery said. “And that’s what it looked like tonight.”
Here’s the Blues’ postgame media availability with Montgomery, Robert Thomas and Colton Parayko:
Next up for the Blues is a Tuesday visit to the Blackhawks. Binnington will be hoping for a quieter night with the puck in Chicago.
