The Senators won big in Brady Tkachuk’s return, but they might have lost their goalie.
Linus Ullmark left Wednesday’s game against the Panthers with an apparent lower-body injury. He went down in the third period and was helped off the ice, and Ottawa hasn’t shared how serious it is.
Here’s the moment he went down, courtesy of Sportsnet:
Ullmark made a save on a long-range shot, then tried to push to his left and dropped into the butterfly. He stayed there while some of his teammates got into a scuffle between the benches, according to Daily Faceoff’s Tyler Kuehl. Trainers and Claude Giroux eventually helped him to the dressing room.
He left at 3:25 of the third with 16 saves on 17 shots. The only goal he allowed was Tkachuk’s first-period power-play marker.
Samuel Ersson stopped the one shot he saw, and the Senators closed out a 5-1 win. Stephen Halliday sealed it:
The loss would sting because Ullmark has been the story of Ottawa’s start. He’s 7-1-0 with a 1.33 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage, and we wrote about his Vezina-level form earlier this month. He already missed a game after getting hurt against the Bruins.
Ersson has had a rougher go, with a .829 save percentage in three appearances before Wednesday, per theScore. Jonas Johansson is the third goalie and would likely be the call-up if Ullmark has to sit.
Ottawa hosts the Sharks on Thursday, so an update on Ullmark should come quickly. The Senators also got Jake Sanderson back with two assists, and you can read about the Tkachuk goal and the hostile welcome as well.
