Nikita Kucherov’s agent may have tipped his hand on Montreal.

Dan Milstein was discussing Kucherov’s future on the DFO Insider podcast with Jeff Marek and David Pagnotta when he brought up the Canadiens and said the club has space for another star.

“They have a great thing going in Montreal,” Milstein said. “Perhaps there is room for one or two more superstars with the structure of contracts that they have.”

Marek and Pagnotta jumped on it right away and asked whether they should read it between the lines. Milstein reacted like he had said more than he meant to and tried to backtrack.

A fan account posted the moment Friday, and it had mostly slipped by until then. Watch Milstein’s reaction:

Milstein never said Kucherov wants to play in Montreal, and the walk-back leaves room to read it either way. Still, the Canadiens were already a name in this saga.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said Nov. 1 that Kucherov would consider both Montreal and Toronto if the Lightning moved him and liked the offer, calling them two teams “among many.” Our post on Friedman’s report has the full comments:

Kucherov carries a 10-team no-trade clause, so the list of teams he approves is short. Friedman also said teams believe he won’t sign anywhere before July 1, and The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun reported he wants at least $20 million a year over six years.

Milstein told the same podcast Wednesday that things with the Lightning went “horribly wrong” and it was “time to move on.” A clean break from Tampa Bay is the one outcome he has said out loud.
