Connor Hellebuyck finally explained why he asked out of Winnipeg.

The Devils goaltender posted a letter to Jets fans on his Instagram on Wednesday, and the reason he gave was family. He said “very challenging circumstances involving my family” played a role in his decision to request a trade, and that he is keeping the details private.

Hellebuyck acknowledged how the request landed with the people who cheered for him for 11 seasons.

“I know my decision to request a trade was disappointing and frustrating for many people, especially those who supported me throughout my career. I understand those feelings, and I want everyone to know it was an extremely difficult decision.”

He went on to say he and his family felt a change was best for them, and he asked people to respect their privacy. Here is the letter in full:

Hellebuyck also thanked Jets owner Mark Chipman and general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, along with his teammates, coaches and staff. He wrote about the life he and his family built in Manitoba, including time spent fishing on the lakes.

His message to the fans ended on a warm note.

“To the great Jets fans who supported me and my family, thank you. I’ll never forget the pride I felt representing Winnipeg, and I wish the Jets and the entire community nothing but the best.”

Hellebuyck spent 11 seasons with the Jets and won three Vezina Trophies and the 2025 Hart Trophy. He went 345-208-55 in 625 games with Winnipeg, and the Jets sent him to New Jersey on Oct. 23 for Dawson Mercer, Alexander Command, Nico Daws, Nick Bjugstad and two picks.

He has won all three of his starts since the trade, including his Devils home debut against the Oilers on Tuesday.

The Devils visit Winnipeg next Tuesday, Nov. 10, and Hellebuyck will see Jets fans in person for the first time since the trade.
