Jacob Fowler stole one in St. Louis. The 21-year-old Canadiens goalie stopped 46 shots in a 2-0 win over the Blues on Tuesday, a career high and his second shutout of the season.
Montreal was outshot 46-20 at Enterprise Center and still won, Fowler’s sixth straight victory. He has now allowed one goal or fewer in each of his last three starts.
Here’s our recap of the night:
It came at a great moment, too. Fowler was named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week a day earlier, and he followed it up by standing on his head against a Blues team that threw everything at him.
Zachary Bolduc scored the opener against the team that drafted him, roofing a one-timer from the right circle at 8:37 of the second period. Florian Xhekaj added his first NHL goal at 2:17 of the third by tipping a Mike Matheson shot twice. Matheson had both assists.
Jordan Binnington made 18 saves for St. Louis, which has been shut out in back-to-back games.
Fowler talked to reporters after the game about all that rubber. He said the defense deserved the credit for clearing the front of his net.
“I think we put a lot of emphasis on the D of having good box outs, and I thought they were terrific tonight,” Fowler said. “They let me see the shots, and if you wanna be a goalie in this league, if you see it, you gotta try to stop it. So, got lucky tonight.”
Fowler was also asked about a puck he fired up the ice and whether he’d ever scored a goal. He hasn’t, and the answer was a good one. Here’s the postgame video:

Fowler said the teammates will hear about it. “I wasn’t even close with a muffin,” he said. “I wouldn’t be able to live with that if that ended up in our net there.”
Fowler is turning into the story of the season in Montreal. He set a Heritage Classic record as the youngest goalie to win an outdoor game on Sunday, and the Canadiens are 7-3-2 with a five-game point streak.
Montreal has a few days off now, and Fowler said he’ll be fine after the workload.
