Islanders Third Jersey Finalists: Fisherman Made the Cut

The Fisherman is back on the ballot.

New York unveiled the eight finalists in its fan-designed third jersey contest Tuesday, and the divisive mid-90s logo made the bracket twice. One version sets him on navy with teal and orange waves running across the chest. The other puts him on a full orange sweater with a navy yoke.

The rest of the field splits into three more themed pairs. Two lighthouse crests, again one navy and one orange. Two NY-and-stick sweaters in that same color split. And a wordmark matchup between a navy jersey with a cream chest band reading ISLANDERS and one with ISLES stretched across the front.

Take a look at all eight:

First-round voting opens Wednesday at noon ET and closes at 5 p.m. on Aug. 14, with fans picking a winner out of each head-to-head pair. Round two runs Aug. 15 to Aug. 17 and cuts the field to two. Round three goes Aug. 18 to Aug. 20.

Whatever wins then goes into a full kit build for the socks, pants, gloves and helmet.

Islanders president of business operations Kelly Cheeseman talked about the volume of entries in the team’s announcement:

“Islanders fans have once again blown us away with their incredible creativity and the sheer volume of participation. From over 80,000 submissions down to our final bracket of eight, every step of this journey proves just how deeply invested Isles Nation is in the identity of this franchise.”

A committee of players and hockey operations staff handled the trimming. Fans sent in 80,490 designs before submissions closed July 24, a haul big enough that New York pushed the field from five finalists to eight.

No NHL franchise has ever let its fans draw an official sweater before, so the winning design carries some history with it. It just carries it slowly. The jersey does not reach the ice until 2027-28.
