Lane Hutson didn’t bother dressing it up.
The 22-year-old Habs defenseman walked out of the Bell Centre dressing room Wednesday and gave reporters a one-line read on Montreal’s 4-0 loss to Carolina in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final.
A reporter asked Hutson what happened. He didn’t blink.
“It’s pretty self-explanatory. Sh-ty, sh-t game,” Hutson said.
Watch the post-game scrum:
Hutson stuck around long enough to give goaltender Jakub Dobes a pat on the back. That was about it.
“It seemed like the only guy who showed up was Doby. We were just not good enough, didn’t answer the bell. The good news is we get another chance to answer the bell.”
Numbers backed him up. Carolina put 43 shots on Dobes, who stopped 40 of them. Montreal managed 18 all night against Frederik Andersen, who picked up his third shutout of the playoffs. Sebastian Aho, Jordan Staal and Logan Stankoven all scored inside a 2:47 stretch late in the first period to put Carolina up 3-0.
That was the game.
Montreal looked sharp in the opener, taking Game 1 6-2 in Raleigh. Carolina has rattled off three straight since, two of them in overtime, before flattening the Habs at home on Wednesday. Bell Centre booed the team off the ice, and head coach Martin St-Louis said the fans weren’t wrong.

Game 5 is Friday at Lenovo Center. Lose and the season ends in Raleigh. Win and Montreal drags the series back to Bell Centre on Sunday.
Hutson’s quote tells you which side of that line the Habs feel they’re sitting on.
