- Alex Tuch scored the overtime winner as the Capitals beat the Sabres 4-3
- He also scored in the first period of his first game against his former team
- Read below for how Washington erased a 2-0 deficit
Alex Tuch beat his old team in overtime.
The Capitals winger scored 3:42 into the extra frame Saturday night, finishing a feed from Dylan Strome to lift Washington to a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres. It was his first game against the club he played five seasons for before this summer’s sign-and-trade.
Watch the winner:
Tuch had already scored once in the first period. Washington was down 2-0 after goals from Jack Quinn and Josh Doan, and Tuch cut it to 2-1 at 16:10 when what looked like a centering pass banged off a Sabres player and into the net.
The Capitals had a fun take on that one:
Strome then took over the second period with two goals, one to tie it 2-2 and another late in the frame to make it 3-2. Noah Ostlund tied the game 3-3 just 2:20 into the third on a deflection, which sent it to overtime.
Tuch got the last word. Strome and Jakob Chychrun set up the winner, his seventh goal of the season.
A day earlier, Tuch had talked about facing his former teammates for the first time and said he had “a big dumb smile on my face” just thinking about it. We covered that in our preview of the game.
The smile showed up. He grew up in Syracuse, spent five seasons with Buffalo and helped the Sabres end their 14-season playoff drought last spring. Two goals against them in one night, including the winner, is a pretty good way to introduce yourself to the other bench.
