Jack Eichel had heard enough about Mitch Marner’s so-called playoff problem.

The Vegas captain made that clear Thursday night, defending his new teammate during an NHL on TNT intermission interview while the Golden Knights were on their way to a 5-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks in Game 6.

Eichel was asked about Marner’s tear through the second round, and he didn’t dance around it.

“He’s a game breaker, right? You saw it in that series. He was the best player in that series… I feel like he’s had a lot of critics, and I feel like he’s shutting a lot of people up right now, and I’m super happy for him.”

Catch Eichel and the rest of the Knights talking after the win:

Marner has the numbers to back Eichel up. He’s piled up 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) in 12 games this spring, three more than any other player still skating. Eleven of those points came in six games against the Ducks, including a natural hat trick in Game 3.

That output already swallows what he did across nine postseasons with Toronto. Marner scored only 13 goals in 70 playoff games as a Leaf, and the “can’t score when it matters” line followed him into every spring exit.

He opened Game 6 with the cleanest piece of stickhandling you’ll see in a series clincher:

Vegas fired Bruce Cassidy on March 29 with eight games left and handed the room to John Tortorella, and Marner has credited that change for the team’s surge. Torts went 7-0-1 down the stretch, and the Knights have now closed both playoff rounds in six games.

Colorado is up next. The Avalanche finished with the league’s best record and are 8-1 this postseason. If Marner keeps producing like this, Eichel won’t be the only one defending him.
