The Sharks have already taken a real swing at Simon Edvinsson.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman wrote in his latest 32 Thoughts column that San Jose’s talks with the Red Wings are substantive, with at least one serious offer between them. Detroit did not accept it, according to Friedman, who added that this is not to say the Wings were being unreasonable.

Boston, Nashville, St. Louis, San Jose and Seattle all took a long look at the 23-year-old defenseman, per Friedman, though the chatter around the Bruins has quieted down recently.

His information is that Boston, Nashville, San Jose and Seattle have all been asked about young centres. Friedman said he couldn’t speak for certain about the Blues.

The Sharks talks first came up Thursday on the 32 Thoughts podcast. Friedman said the two teams had talked about Edvinsson “pretty extensively,” then was careful about where it goes from here.

“I don’t know that that’s going to happen because I’m not sure what the Sharks are willing to do here… but I do think those teams have talked about them pretty extensively.”

Detroit’s public stance has not moved. Interim GM Shawn Horcoff said earlier this month he had zero interest in trading Edvinsson, and the Red Wings say they are willing to wait until his Dec. 1 signing deadline. Friedman wrote that he wouldn’t expect them to admit anything different.

Edvinsson is a restricted free agent coming off nine goals and 25 points in 72 games. If he doesn’t sign by Dec. 1, he can’t play in the NHL this season.

Pierre LeBrun reported earlier this month that at least 10 teams had called about him:

Friedman added two more wrinkles. Seattle is weighing an extension for Vince Dunn while also examining Edvinsson and pursuing wingers. And Carolina threatened an offer sheet around July 1, possibly with a plan to flip him to a third team, though Friedman has no information it was revisited after Detroit’s GM change.

All of it lands alongside the Dylan Larkin trade saga, which has Detroit shopping two core players at once. Friedman wrote that the Wings badly want a good return on both, and the Dec. 1 deadline is about a month away.
