The Red Wings suspended Dylan Larkin without pay on Thursday.
Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff announced the move after Larkin informed the team he will no longer play for Detroit. It follows the news we told you about earlier, when Larkin and his agent made it clear he was done waiting on a trade.
Horcoff put out a statement through the team. Here it is:
The Red Wings said they are “disappointed by his decision, particularly given his obligations to the organization and his teammates.” They also said they will keep exploring trades, but any deal needs Larkin’s approval and has to be in the best interests of the Red Wings.
That second part matters. Larkin has a full no-trade clause and has expanded his list of acceptable destinations to 10 teams, but Detroit is making it clear it will not take just anything.
The financial hit for Larkin is real. Per the team, he forfeits $41,237.11 each day he sits. TSN’s Darren Dreger floated that exact number hours earlier when he raised the possibility of a suspension:
Larkin’s agent Pat Brisson said earlier in the day, per TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, that “Dylan’s had enough of the situation.” Larkin first asked out in May, and our earlier look at the Wild’s offers showed how long this has dragged on.
The 30-year-old has six points in 10 games this season and carries an $8.7 million cap hit through 2030-31. He has spent his entire 12-year career in Detroit, which drafted him 15th overall in 2014.
Detroit hosted the Blackhawks on Thursday night without him, and the Red Wings are now paying nothing to a player who has told them he is gone. Every day without a deal costs Larkin money and keeps the Red Wings from getting a return.
