The Oilers have an update on Zach Hyman, and it sounds better than Monday night looked.

Edmonton placed the winger on injured reserve with a neck injury, head coach Mike Babcock said Wednesday. Hyman will not play against the Flames tonight.

Babcock talked about how the diagnosis changed once the team got a closer look.

“We’re just being extra cautious,” Babcock said. “Originally when you see it, you think maybe it’s a head thing and then you find out it’s a neck thing and that’s a real good thing for you.”

Hyman got hurt at 7:36 of the second period Monday when Red Wings defenseman Andreas Englund hit him into the boards. His head appeared to hit the glass, and he needed help getting off the ice.

We wrote about the hit and Babcock’s first reaction on Monday night, when he sounded worried about the forward getting hurt twice.

This is the second injury of the season for Hyman. He missed six games after getting hurt in the Sept. 29 opener and returned Oct. 17 against Utah. He has one goal in six games since.

The Oilers are 8-2-2 and have not needed much help up front, with Connor McDavid sitting at 34 points through 12 games. Jason Dickinson returns Wednesday after missing six games, and defenseman Mattias Ekholm is expected back from his concussion.

Hyman is out for the Flames game, and Babcock hasn’t given a timeline beyond that.
