Sean Farrell did not stay a restricted free agent for long.
Anaheim signed the 24-year-old forward to a one-year, two-way contract on Tuesday, a day after acquiring him from Montreal in exchange for Sasha Pastujov. Farrell was still unsigned when that trade went through, so the Ducks had to finish the job before he could play a game for them.

The deal pays $850,000 at the NHL level and $155,000 in the minors, and it lines Farrell up for Group 6 unrestricted free agency next summer.

Montreal drafted Farrell 124th overall in 2020, and the resume he built after that was loud. He piled up 101 points in 53 games with the USHL’s Chicago Steel, then went to Harvard and scored 81 points in 58 games across two seasons.
That second college year made him a Hobey Baker finalist. He also skated for the United States at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing and put up six points in four games.
An NHL job never followed. Farrell signed his entry-level contract at the end of Harvard’s 2022-23 season and got into six games with the Canadiens, scoring once. He has not played an NHL game since.
Laval treated him better. His totals with the Rocket climbed every year, from 28 points as a rookie pro to 44 the next season to a career-high 53 in 72 games last year.
Training camp in September is where this gets settled. Farrell has spent three years proving he can score at the American Hockey League level, and Anaheim just handed him a season to try it one rung higher.
