Devon Toews spent Sunday afternoon working on a very different surface.
The Avalanche defenseman threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Coors Field before the Colorado Rockies hosted the St. Louis Cardinals, and the lefty dropped a strike right over the plate.
Toews walked out in a purple No. 22 Mickey Moniak jersey and threw it to Moniak himself. Take a look:

Coors Field ran an Avalanche highlight package to introduce him, which is where the afternoon went a little sideways. Ryan O’Hara of The Hockey News caught the last clip in the reel, and the guy headlining it was Alex Newhook, who Colorado traded to Montreal back in June 2023.
Denver landed him in October 2020, when the Islanders sent him over for a pair of second-round picks. That deal still looks like one of the most one-sided of the past decade, and Toews has been a top-pair fixture ever since.
He won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022 and put up three goals and 21 assists in 68 games last season. His plus-37 rating was among the best marks in the league.
The 32-year-old sits at 302 points in 541 career games, and Colorado is bringing essentially the same group back for another run.
Colorado opens the season at home against the Los Angeles Kings on Sept. 30, so Toews has about three weeks before he trades the mound for the blue line.
