  • Read below for what Calgary lost and where Cooley’s season stood

The Flames lost Devin Cooley in the middle of the Battle of Alberta.

Cooley left Wednesday’s game in Edmonton with a lower-body injury and did not return. Calgary confirmed midway through the second period that the goalie was done for the night.

The injury came late in the first period, when Oilers forward Colton Dach collided with Cooley in the crease. Cooley appeared to hurt his left leg on the play. Dach drew a two-minute minor penalty, and Cooley stayed in to finish the final 12 seconds of the period.

Dustin Wolf then started the second period in the Calgary net. Watch the swap happen:

Cooley stopped eight of nine shots before he came out. The Oilers led 2-0 after 40 minutes on goals from Mathieu Joseph and Mattias Ekholm.

Calgary had other bad news too. Forward Brennan Othmann went down with an upper-body injury after he fought Oilers defenseman Ty Emberson in the opening period, and he did not return either.

The loss stings for a Flames team that came in riding a four-game winning streak, and Cooley was the reason. He was named the NHL’s Second Star of the Week after stopping 66 of 68 shots in two starts, and Wednesday was his fifth straight start.

He has also become a viral name around the league for his postgame interviews. We broke down the best of them in our Cooley viral interviews story, and the Flames announced the injury with that streak fresh:

Wolf has been the other half of the Calgary tandem. He came into Wednesday with an .834 save percentage through five games, so the Flames need him to find a groove if Cooley misses time.

Cooley is under contract through 2027-28 at a $1.35 million cap hit. Calgary has not given a timeline on his return.
