Chris Cuthbert made the call of the night Monday. The wrong call.
Sportsnet’s veteran play-by-play voice was on the mic for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final between the Hurricanes and Canadiens. Carolina won it 14 minutes into overtime to grab a 2-1 series lead, and Cuthbert called out the wrong Svechnikov.
“Evgeni Svechnikov has won it for Carolina in overtime,” he said, crediting Andrei Svechnikov’s older brother. Evgeni hasn’t suited up in the NHL since 2022-23 after stops in Detroit, San Jose, and Winnipeg.

The 68-year-old clocked the slip after the game. Early Tuesday morning, Cuthbert hopped on X with a self-deprecating apology to Andrei and a wink at another of his recurring broadcast trip-ups:
That Aho line is broadcaster comedy gold. There are two Sebastian Ahos currently in pro hockey, the Finnish center who plays for Carolina and the Swedish defenseman now in the Penguins’ organization. Mixing them up has tripped just about every commentator at some point.
Cuthbert left TSN for Sportsnet a few years back and has been the network’s lead playoff voice ever since. Owning the mistake quickly and turning it into a joke is the move.
Carolina leads the series 2-1 with Game 4 set for Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET in Montreal.
