- Read below for what each player did to earn it
Leon Draisaitl is the NHL’s First Star of the Week.
The Oilers center scored twice in each of his three games and led the league with six goals while collecting nine points. Flames goaltender Devin Cooley is the Second Star, and Canadiens rookie Jacob Fowler is the Third Star for the week ending Oct. 25.
Draisaitl also led the league with five power-play goals, three more than the next-closest player. He scored twice with the man advantage in a 4-3 overtime win over the Wild on Oct. 20, and Edmonton moved into first place in the Pacific Division with two wins on the week.
His best night came two days later. Draisaitl posted two goals and three assists for his eighth career five-point game in a 6-5 shootout win over the defending Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes.
He closed the week with both Edmonton goals in a 7-2 loss to the Maple Leafs. That made it six straight games with at least one goal, and we covered his 12 goals in 11 games start when it happened. Here is our graphic from that night:
Cooley stopped 66 of 68 shots in two starts, good for a 1.00 goals-against average and a .971 save percentage. He made 38 saves in a 2-1 win over Minnesota on Oct. 22 and stopped 28 of 29 in a 4-1 win over Detroit two days later. Calgary has won three straight.
Fowler went 2-0-0 with a 1.00 GAA and .964 save percentage. He stopped 20 of 21 against Chicago, then made history at the Heritage Classic with 33 saves on 34 shots in a 2-1 win over Winnipeg. At 21 years and 335 days, he became the youngest goalie to start and win an outdoor NHL game.
The rookie has won five straight starts and sits at 5-1-0 with a 1.79 GAA and .924 save percentage.
Draisaitl and Cooley both play tonight. The Oilers host the Red Wings, and the Flames welcome the Maple Leafs.
