Andrei Svechnikov gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference Final on Monday, and he had to wait around for the NHL to give him credit for it.

Svechnikov ripped a shot through traffic at 14:06 of overtime to beat the Canadiens 3-2 at Bell Centre, although the goal was first handed to Sebastian Aho on the screen in front. Watch the winner:

Seth Jarvis fed Svechnikov above the right circle and the Russian winger fired through Aho’s screen, beating Jakub Dobes through the legs. The play was originally called a tip-in for Aho before the NHL adjusted the scoring during postgame media availability.

Shayne Gostisbehere opened the scoring 8:24 into the first period and Taylor Hall banged in his own rebound at 16:22 to put Carolina up 2-1 after 20 minutes. Mike Matheson roofed a one-timer from the high slot off an Ivan Demidov feed in the first, and Lane Hutson buried a power-play give-and-go with Cole Caufield in the second to tie things at 2-2.

Frederik Andersen made 10 saves for Carolina, which outshot the Habs 38-13 on the night. Dobes finished with 35 saves in the loss.

Asked about pulling out a second straight overtime win in this series, the Carolina winger kept it short. Here’s the post-game media availability with him and Aho:

“Good feelings. It was one of the hardest games we played,” Svechnikov said. “Good thing we won that game. I think it was a lot to fight for.”

Carolina is now 5-0 in overtime this postseason, with every one of those wins ending 3-2. The most recent before tonight was Nikolaj Ehlers’ Game 2 winner on Saturday.

Montreal didn’t put a single shot on Andersen in the extra frame and dropped to 2-5 at the Bell Centre this spring. Game 4 goes Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET back in Montreal.
