Sidney Crosby is now tied with Marcel Dionne for sixth on the NHL’s all-time points list.

The Penguins captain scored on the power play with 3:11 left in the third period Saturday in Montreal, cutting the Canadiens’ lead to 5-4 and putting him at 1,771 career points, the same number Dionne finished with. Here’s the goal:

Crosby finished the night with three points. He added two assists in a game Pittsburgh lost 5-4, and the Canadiens held on for their fifth straight win.

It was already a historic night for him. Earlier in the game, Crosby set up Erik Karlsson’s opening power-play goal for his 1,112th assist, passing Ray Bourque for the most assists with one franchise. We broke that record down here, and our own graphic of the moment is below:

The Dionne chase had been building for weeks. Crosby was five points shy when we last checked in, and he needed to hit that number in Pittsburgh’s two games this week. He got there with a goal on a night the team came up short.

Penguins defenseman Spencer Stastney was asked about watching Crosby keep climbing at this stage of his career.

“It’s crazy. I grew up with a Fathead of him on my wall,” Stastney said. “So it’s special and the fact that he’s still doing it and doing it at a high level, it’s surreal. I know we’re all happy for him, but it would have been nice to get a win for him tonight too.”

The Penguins posted the assist record clip right away, and it shows how quickly the night piled up for Crosby:

Crosby is 39 and in his 22nd NHL season. His next point passes Dionne outright for sole possession of sixth.

Ron Francis is next at 1,798, which leaves Crosby 27 points away from fifth place. The Penguins play the Golden Knights on Tuesday, and Crosby gets his first chance to move past Dionne there.
