Broberg’s Agent Reveals How He Set Up Oilers Offer Sheets

The offer sheets that stripped two young players out of Edmonton in 2024 were no accident.

Darren Ferris, Philip Broberg’s agent, went on the PuckPedia Hockey Show this week and walked through how he set both deals up. He was handling Broberg’s contract, saw the Oilers pinned against the salary cap, and started making calls.

Ferris was asked how the Broberg and Holloway offer sheets came together.

“In Broberg and Holloway’s case, I originally was working on Philip’s [contract] and calling around to try and position that. I was actually helping Holloway’s agent at the time. He reached out for some help in his negotiation. It kind of morphed into me setting up the offer sheets for both players.”

The plan leaned on Edmonton’s cap problem. A team chasing an offer sheet wanted a real shot at keeping the player, not just a way to drive up the price.

“When Edmonton put themselves in the position they were in, it made it more likely,” Ferris said.

The Blues signed both on Aug. 13, 2024. Broberg’s sheet paid $4.58 million per year over two seasons. Holloway’s came in at $2.29 million. Edmonton, tight against the cap, passed on matching either one.

The Oilers took a 2025 second-round pick for Broberg and a third-rounder for Holloway as compensation. Two years later, both moves look like steals for St. Louis.

Broberg grew into a top-four defenseman and signed a six-year, $48 million extension in January. Holloway landed a five-year, $38.75 million deal in May. Neither is going anywhere.

Ferris has been busy on the mic. He used the same episode to rip the Maple Leafs over their handling of Mitch Marner.

Edmonton reached the 2025 Cup Final without the pair, then flamed out in the first round this spring against Anaheim. The two who got away are locked up in St. Louis through the end of the decade.
