The Blackhawks aren’t messing with their goalie depth.

Chicago signed Drew Commesso to a two-year contract extension on Monday. The deal carries an $875K cap hit, per an official team announcement.

Here’s the announcement:

That structure gives Commesso some protection. Year one is a two-way deal for 2026-27, then it flips to one-way in 2027-28. He’ll make $850K at the NHL level next season and a flat $900K in the second year no matter where he plays.

Commesso is a 23-year-old the Blackhawks grabbed in the second round of the 2020 draft. He’s spent the last three seasons as the No. 1 goalie in Rockford, piling up 114 AHL games and a .906 save percentage for the IceHogs.

It adds to a busy Chicago summer that already included a six-year deal for Bowen Byram.

His NHL sample is tiny, but it went well. Commesso went 2-1-0 in three starts last season with a .918 save percentage, the best big-league numbers of his young career.

Watch Commesso turn aside 34 shots in a Rockford win over San Jose:

Two names sit ahead of him in Chicago’s crease. Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom are both signed for next season, which lines Commesso up as the organization’s third goalie. He’ll push Soderblom for the backup role, though Soderblom’s $2.5 million salary makes him tough to send down.

If Commesso stacks up a few strong outings, he could slide in as Knight’s backup by 2027-28, right as his contract shifts to one-way money.
