The Blues opened their season with a 4-0 shutout in Dallas. It might have cost them a forward for a while.

Jim Montgomery said after Friday’s win that Alexey Toropchenko has an upper-body injury and is “more than day-to-day.” The team expects to know more once MRI results come back.

Here’s Montgomery’s postgame availability, which also features Joel Hofer, Mason McTavish and Adam Jiricek:

Toropchenko was behind the St. Louis net early in the second period when Lian Bichsel drove him into the end boards, with Tyler Seguin also in on the play. The 27-year-old stayed down clutching his right arm before head athletic trainer Ray Barile helped him to the room.

Watch the hit:

He didn’t return. Toropchenko finished with eight shifts and 5:08 of ice time.

Things got chippier from there. Brandon Carlo was ejected for kneeing Roope Hintz, and Seguin took a double minor for high-sticking Philip Broberg in the third. Hofer still stopped all 25 shots he faced.

Injuries hit Toropchenko hard last season. A home accident in December 2025 left him with burns on his legs, and he missed 17 games in total. His production dropped to four goals and 11 points in 65 games.

Two years earlier, he played all 82 games and scored 14 goals. St. Louis signed him to a two-year extension in January that runs through 2027-28, and the 6-foot-6, 227-pound winger brings real size to the fourth line.

Dillon Dube and Zach Dean were the two forwards on the NHL roster who didn’t dress in Dallas, so one of them figures to draw in if Toropchenko can’t go.

Dube hasn’t played an NHL game since 2023-24 with Calgary. He spent 2024-25 in the KHL and was one of five players acquitted in the Hockey Canada sexual assault trial in July 2025.

St. Louis plays in Colorado tonight at 8 p.m. CT, and the MRI results will decide whether Toropchenko heads to injured reserve.
