Dylan Garand went from the waiver wire to his first NHL shutout in five days.
The Rangers goalie stopped all 22 shots he faced in a 2-0 win over the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Friday. Afterward, Garand was asked what the last few days had been like, and he walked reporters through all of it.
“This has been the craziest week of my life,” Garand said. “I got cut Sunday and put on waivers, I cleared Monday and went to Hartford and found an apartment, had two practices there, then got called back up and I’m playing on Friday.”
Watch Garand break down the whole week:
He also said assistant GM Ryan Martin pulled him off the ice in the middle of a Wolf Pack practice to tell him he was headed back to New York.
Joonas Korpisalo beat him out in camp for the job behind Igor Shesterkin. That changed in a hurry when Korpisalo landed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury.
Head coach Mike Sullivan was asked how Garand handled getting sent down.
“This week speaks volumes about his character,” Sullivan said. “Pro sports are competitive and things don’t always go your way. You have to work through the ebbs and flows, and I really have great admiration for how Dylan handled this whole situation.”
Detroit pushed hard through the middle of the game and put up 20 shots in the first two periods. Garand held firm, and the Wings managed just two shots in the third.
Sean Durzi gave New York the lead with a power-play goal at 5:12 of the first, his first as a Ranger. Eeli Tolvanen sealed it with an empty-netter at 18:44 of the third.
Check out the highlights:
Garand’s 22 saves were the most by a Rangers rookie in a shutout since Shesterkin made 27 against the Devils on April 13, 2021. New York Post beat writer Mollie Walker had a few more notes on the milestone:
It came in just his fourth NHL game. Garand, a fourth-round pick in 2020, went 2-0-1 in three games late last season before the Rangers gave him a two-year extension in June.
Rangers goalies are having quite a week. Shesterkin scored a goalie goal against Tampa Bay on Thursday, and his backup followed it up with a shutout one night later.
New York is now 2-1-0 and faces the Utah Mammoth on Sunday. Not bad for a guy who was apartment hunting in Hartford on Monday.
