Will Ferrell has become one of the top celebrity sports fans of all time.

The actor showed up to Thursday night’s Kings-Lightning game at Crypto.com Arena dressed in full NHL referee gear. He sat in his season ticket seats behind the glass and spent the entire game making calls like he was working it.

Ferrell signaled penalties, called icing, the whole bit. The arena’s video board kept cutting to him as he played along with the gag.

Ferrell gave an awesome interview with FanDuel Sports Network West during the game. The Orange County actor explained that he supports NHL refs and is always ready to step in.

“I’ve got it all ready to go at a moment’s notice,” Will Ferrell said. “Because you never know if one of these guys go down, I may have to put on the skates and get out there.”

This time, Ferell took it a step further, taking credit for the actual refs in the game.

“I trained two of the guys out here,” Ferrell said. “Two of my prized students, Brandon and Francis. They’re calling a heck of a game.”

Here’s that full interview that aired live on TV:

Francis Charron and Brandon Schrader were actually the on-ice officials for the game.

This isn’t new for Ferrell, a diehard Kings season ticket holder. The man has been sitting in regular seats a couple rows behind the bench for years rather than hiding in some luxury suite. When you’ve got that kind of money and still choose to sit with real fans, that alot.

Last December, Ferrell dressed as Buddy the Elf from his movie. He added an unlit cigarette to the costume.

The year before that, he painted his face black and white for the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

But dressing up as a referee might be his best act yet. Fans on social media ate it up, with one noting, “He is making quite literally every call, too.”

Another fan joked, “He would probably do better than half of the refs in the NHL.”

Ferrell has had some legendary stunts at Kings’ games. He once appeared as Ron Burgundy during a broadcast and shouted “NO CUPS” every time the Sharks had the puck. There’s also a famous photo of him giving double middle fingers to opposing fans during a playoff game.

The Kings won the game 3-2 in overtime, but Ferrell’s antics were the highlight of the night.
