Goalies are simply a different breed.

Vancouver Canucks goalie Arturs Silovs lost his blocker on Tuesday night against the New York Rangers. However, he didn’t let that stop him from making a save while barehanded.

Yes, you read that correctly. During the game between the Rangers and Canucks, Silovs had his blocker knocked off during live play. Despite the disadvantage, he continued to play his position, putting his bare right hand behind his back.

Silovs even made a great save on Rangers forward Vincent Trocheck without his blocker. Check out the wild sequence below, beginning with Trocheck knocking off the goalie’s blocker in the crease:

Per NHL rules, if a goalie loses equipment during a scoring chance, play continues until the scoring chance is completed. The rule prioritizes scoring opportunities over immediate equipment repairs, though many argue this puts goalies at unnecessary risk.

The funniest part of that whole clip might have been Canucks’ blueliner Tyler Myers trying to get Silovs his blocker back, but instead mistakenly moving it even farther away. It’s easy to laugh at now, but Myers wouldn’t have felt great had his goalie suffered an injury.

“Myers helpfully pushing Silovs’s blocker further out of reach. If he had any brains at all…”, commented a Canucks fan on social media.

The crowd at Rogers Arena erupted in cheers after the fearless Silovs sequence. The Vancouver fans clearly appreciated the sheer determination and skill displayed by their young tendy. Some goalies would simply refuse to keep playing if they lost an important piece of their equipment.

This save was reminiscent of when fellow Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko made a famous “scorpion save” without his blocker. Funny enough, that also came against the Rangers, at Rogers Arena, back in 2021.

The 23-year-old Silovs is 4-1-2 with a 3.86 GAA and .850 save percentage so far in 2024-25. The youngster from Latvia has been thrust into the starting role due to Thatcher Demko’s injury.

While Silovs’ play on the ice leaves lots to be desired, his barehanded save is exactly the type of gutsy performance that will win over fans in Vancouver.
