Henrik Sedin’s son is a professional athlete in Vancouver now, and he got there on a soccer pitch.

The Vancouver Whitecaps announced Thursday that they signed Valter Sedin to a professional deal with Whitecaps FC 2, the club’s MLS Next Pro reserve side. The 19-year-old midfielder is under contract through June 2028.

That makes him the first Sedin drawing a professional paycheck in Vancouver since Henrik and Daniel walked away from the Canucks in 2018.

Sedin spoke about the move in the club’s announcement.

“I’m excited to be back at the club and to sign a professional contract. I’m looking forward to continuing to develop my game, and to continue pushing forward in my career.”

He joined the Whitecaps academy in August 2020 as a 13-year-old and spent five years in the program, including a run to the 2024 MLS Next quarterfinals with the U-17 side. He made his professional debut as an academy call-up with WFC2 on June 30, 2024.

In February 2025, the dual citizen left for Sweden to play for the U-19 team at Hammarby IF, one of the biggest clubs in his father’s home country.

This summer put him back on the radar. Sedin played for Canada at the Concacaf U-20 Championship in Mexico, scored in the group finale against Jamaica, and helped the Canadians win their quarterfinal to reach the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup. It’s the country’s first trip to that tournament since 2007.

A semifinal loss to Mexico ended Canada’s shot at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Take a look at the goal he scored in Puebla:

Sporting director Axel Schuster explained what the club saw in him.

“Valter grew through our academy program before testing himself in Sweden. He is a young player who has always had the right mentality, and he did very well in helping Canada qualify for the U-20 World Cup.”

Whitecaps FC 2 sit 13th out of 14 teams in the MLS Next Pro Western Conference with five games left. Sedin is also eligible for a short-term call-up to the MLS club, which is chasing the 2026 MLS Cup after losing last year’s final to Inter Miami.

Henrik is busy across town. He and Daniel were named co-presidents of hockey operations with the Canucks on May 14, the same day Vancouver handed Ryan Johnson the general manager job.

One Sedin generation builds the roster at Rogers Arena. The next one reports to Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.
