Kyle Dubas just took a name off his 2027 to-do list.
The Penguins announced Friday that Tommy Novak has signed a three-year contract extension worth $4.65 million per season. It begins in 2027-28 and runs through 2029-30, keeping the 29-year-old forward in Pittsburgh through his age-33 year.
Novak was on track to reach unrestricted free agency after the 2026-27 season. That would have dropped him into a 2027 class already headlined by Sidney Crosby and Cale Makar.
He earned the raise with the most durable season of his career. Novak was the only Penguin to dress for all 82 games in 2025-26.
The center finished with 16 goals and 26 assists, and his 42 points ranked seventh on the team. Five of those goals came on the power play, fifth-most in Pittsburgh.
The biggest goal of his season arrived 17 seconds into overtime against Boston on March 8, finishing off a comeback from three goals down in a 5-4 win.

Dubas acquired him from Nashville in March 2025, sending Michael Bunting and a 2026 fourth-round pick the other way in a deal that also brought back Luke Schenn. Novak had 22 points in 52 games with the Predators that year.
A full season in a new room fixed that.
The St. Paul native put up 88 points in 129 games across four seasons at the University of Minnesota before turning pro. Nashville drafted him 85th overall in 2015, and he now sits at 65 goals and 159 points in 285 NHL games.
His spring went well too. Novak led Team USA in assists at the 2026 World Championship with seven, adding a goal for eight points in eight games.
Pittsburgh’s 2027-28 cap sheet now has Novak on it at $4.65 million, and Dubas has one fewer contract to sort out next summer.
