Matthew Tkachuk went down. The IIHF ref wasn’t buying it.

In Team USA’s 4-0 quarterfinal elimination loss to Canada on Thursday at the World Championship in Switzerland, the Florida Panthers captain got tangled up with Canadian defenseman Zach Whitecloud and tumbled to the ice. Tkachuk didn’t draw a penalty, but the on-ice official was mic’d up under the IIHF’s referee-cam setup, and his opinion came through loud and clear.

“Matt, Matt! No!” the ref can be heard saying on the broadcast. “You’re better than this, you’re better than this!”

Social media did the rest within minutes. Watch the moment:

That clip capped a brutal day for the defending world champions. Jet Greaves was a brick wall in the Canada crease, stopping all 34 shots he faced for the shutout. Macklin Celebrini, Dylan Holloway, Connor Brown, and Sidney Crosby supplied the goals.

The other ugly moment came 6:45 into the first period, when Seattle Kraken defenseman Ryan Lindgren took a five-minute major and a game misconduct for an illegal check to the head on Edmonton’s Evan Bouchard. Bouchard, visibly shaken, didn’t return. Full breakdown of that hit and the injury here.

Canada moves on to face Finland in the semifinals. The Americans, who were already stunned 4-2 by Latvia earlier in the tournament, are heading home without a medal.

That dive moment is the one that’s going to stick to Tkachuk. Embellishment is a penalty under IIHF rules, and getting publicly lectured by a referee on a hot mic is the kind of viral clip that doesn’t fade fast.
