Sidney Crosby hasn’t played for Team Canada since 2016, but he picked up right where he left off on Wednesday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

The 37-year-old superstar led the way for the Canadians as they grabbed a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over Team Sweden. Crosby, who was dealing with an injury prior to the tournament, shined in the opener, supplying three assists and earning Player of the Game honors. The Pittsburgh Penguins icon set up Mitch Marner for the game-winner as he beat netminder Filip Gustavsson with a top-corner wrist shot.

In the process, Team Canada has won 26 games in a row with Crosby in the lineup. Their last loss came in the preliminary rounds of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver to the United States, who they eventually beat in the gold medal game. Crosby scored the decisive goal in the final in one of the most iconic moments in Canadian sports history.

Sid The Kid is now averaging 1.12 PPG during this insane unbeaten run.

The 4 Nations opener was one to remember. Canada came out firing on all cylinders, scoring just 56 seconds in. Sidney Crosby took a pass from Connor McDavid and put the puck on Nathan MacKinnon’s stick with a filthy backhand assist before the reigning Hart Trophy winner buried it.

Jon Cooper’s squad quickly doubled their lead later in the first period before Sweden got one back in the second. Mark Stone then put Canada up 3-1 but they squandered a two-goal lead in the third, with the Swedes leveling things up to force OT where Marner played hero.

Despite nearing 40 years old, Crosby clearly hasn’t missed a beat. Fans chanted his name during the Player of the Game announcements and it’s clear that we will see the absolute best version of Sid The Kid in this electric event.
