Ryan Getzlaf is getting his number hung in Anaheim.
The Ducks announced Tuesday that they will retire No. 15 this season, and they let owners Henry and Susan Samueli deliver the news themselves. The team filmed the phone call and posted it.
Henry Samueli told Getzlaf the rafters were overdue for company.
“We’ve got a lot of jerseys hanging from the rafters and we thought it’s time to expand that list of three. We want this season to retire your jersey and hang it from the rafters. We look at what you’ve done for this organization. Played your entire career here. Leading scorer. Leading everything, and what you’ve done in the community with all your charitable work. You’re just a pillar of this organization.”

Getzlaf kept his response short, the way he usually does.
“I appreciate it very much. That’s a tremendous honor to go up there with those three guys. I am extremely grateful and look forward to it.”
Those three guys are Teemu Selanne (No. 8), Paul Kariya (No. 9) and Scott Niedermayer (No. 27). Getzlaf makes four.
His case is not a close call. Getzlaf is the franchise leader in games (1,157), points (1,019) and assists (737), and he sits fourth in goals with 282.
In the playoffs the gap is even wider. He leads every Duck in postseason games (125), goals (37), assists (83) and points (120).

He went 10th overall in the 2003 draft, won the Stanley Cup in 2007 and wore the C for 12 of his 17 seasons. His 2014 campaign brought 87 points and a runner-up finish to Sidney Crosby in Hart Trophy voting.

Retirement in 2022 did not push him out of the sport. Getzlaf has worked for the NHL Department of Player Safety since 2024, and he has been part of Hockey Canada’s management group for the 4 Nations Face-Off, the World Championship and the 2026 Olympics.
Anaheim did not attach a date to the ceremony, so the calendar is still open. The Kings already locked theirs in when they set a night for Anze Kopitar.
Whenever the Ducks pick a night, No. 15 comes out of circulation for good.
